my favorite painters have always been ones that use imagery of prints and pattern (not surprising!)– here are two that i love.

thank you for reminding me of these painters!
I love that top one especially…so beautiful!!
(Have you heard of Louise Hopkins? She does wonderful work with upholstery fabrics..so pretty!) xx
i haven’t heard of louis hopkins, i don’t think. i’ll have to look her up. thanks abigail~
i went to an alice neel exhibit at the whitney (maybe five or six years ago now?) and fell in love with her. i adore her portrait of annie sprinkle, and keep a couple of postcards from the show taped to the wall in my workroom for inspiration.

hi dabney,
that’s where i first saw alice neel too. i loved that exhibit.
I love the use of pattern and fabrics in painting too. It’s something I used to do in my very early paintings from high school but I didn’t realise at the time how many other artists used fabrics in this way. It’s why I like Matisse. Great to hear you mention Louise Hopkins, Abigail, I saw an exhibition of hers and it was really good stuff.
i didn’t find much when i googled Louise Hopkins… but i will probably come across something of hers soon– that always happens when you’ve got someone on your radar…
matisse was my favorite artist from about age 10 to 20. there was a great exhibit in NY recently called Matisse, his Art and his Textiles.
Matisse was the master of pattern in painting. I also find that Sigmar Polke uses pattern much like mattise in such a wonderful way.
