i found this picture of me while sorting through my grandmother’s apartment. i like my outfit… and i remember those handmade dolls so well. i wanted barbies and cabbage patch dolls… but got these instead. of course, now i understand why my mom didn’t like store-bought plastic toys. i’ve realized recently how much these things in my childhood surroundings (books, toys, my bed sheets!) have stuck with me.

  1. OMG! This is so strange. I was just having a conversation yesterday about how the same thing happened to me! (I thought I was getting a cabbage patch doll, but got one of those hand crafted dolls instead). I wanted plastic toys so badly, but instead received handcrafted and antique toys. At the time it was traumatic, but looking back at the situation it’s great. šŸ™‚

  2. i love this pic of you!! the dolls are as big as you are. i hope you still have them somewhere.

  3. i don’t think we do… i’ll have to ask my mom. her friend shelley made them. i remember when my mom and her friends were really into crafts… there were lots of projects around… weavings, bags of yarn, unfinished cross-stiching- i know some of it’s still in the basement… but i haven’t seen those dolls in ages.

  4. Hi Lena- Valorie made these dolls, not Shelley. It will be fun to see what you do when you have kids! xxoo, your mom

  5. I remember those dolls so well! And I had a cabbage patch doll, and I was jealous of your soft dolls.

  6. i love those dolls – isn’t nice when you travel back in the past how certain things just stand out in your mind and they become so much more important
    thanks for sharing

  7. Hee Hee. This post made me smile because the same thing happened to my cousins and I when we were little. We all came out one Christmas morning to find a row of these dolls for us. Our parents said “Look! Cabbage Patch Dolls!” But of course you can’t fool 4 year olds about such a thing!
