sisal bag from oak
oxford flats from ebay

lately i’ve been having fashion flashbacks to the things i wore in 7th and 8th grade– oxfords, doc martins, etc. which made me think of the sisal bags my friends and i had then too— and then i see one on the oak website! mostly i love fashion recycled from the past, and i’ve often heard people say ” i wore it then, i can’t do it again”, and for the first time i can really relate to that. although i actually can see myself wearing some of the early 90’s accessories again, i’m questioning it a little bit. there’s something about those years, when you’re 13, 14, and 15 and discovering fashion and self expression for the first time… it’s a strange time! anyone else around my age relating to this?

  1. ummmm, sometimes yes. like when i had told you i wish i had all my docs – not sure if i can bring myself to wear them if i had them back. maybe some old combat boots that i had are a little closer to what i would actually still wear. but definitely i’m still wearing keds & vans…. and i would wear those ridiculous 80’s boots (but not in the same goofy way w/ thick socks over them and with stirrups!) and i’d wear the brown pointy oxfords you have up. so funny. i think we have to exchange goofy awkward fashion pics.

  2. absolutely! it is funny to think that those sisal bags were all the rage in england at exactly the same time.

  3. er, embarrassingly i still have my sisal bag with the leather straps from 1985, and i would wear docs again in a heartbeat. (i used to love the black oiled chunky shoes with tights and a long skirt…ah, 1992. i miss you.)

  4. I giggled when I saw the bag….I had one too. It ‘s all very strange I agree, Some of it I’m embracing and some of it I dont get…like leggings and those ballet flats with the bows on the toes like the Sam and Libby ones I had for like 5 YEARS straight!

  5. love and remember the sisel bag…and would probably wear it again. have the ‘what was i thinking… wearing them’ for the docs. needless to say, i would never wear them.

  6. as SOON as i saw the pic of the shoes, before even reading the post, i flashed back to 7th-8th grade.

i am having the same weirdness seeing stuff come back from that time. not sure if i can wear it a second time around…

strangely, the sisal bag doesn’t ring a bell. i was in catholic school in a blue collar town, so i was oblivious on many things until high school.

  7. The sisal bag doesn’t ring a bell for me either… and we are “about” the same age 🙂

I do think about my old docs, creepers, and monkey boots. Although I wouldn’t be wearing them again with cut off jean shorts and tights!

  8. i own a pair of black suede internally metal capped docs that have a thick velcro strap instead of laces. i’ve worn them a couple of times this year, they don’t look as bad as they sound… really. 😛

  9. Yes! I love trends from the past but there are certain ones that I just can’t take out of the context of Middle School.Like when I saw mini rucksacks with tassles and tapestry in Lucky Magazine. I just don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that! Sisal bags, though, I think I could love those again.

  10. i still have my sisal bag. actually it was my mother’s but i used it alot and eventually it was mine… you know how that is. anyway, it is a little bit bigger than the purse-sixed ones (which are pretty big already). i’ve used it as a beach bag a couple of times.

i like stuff that the high school kids were wearing when i was in like 7th & 8th grade. like the really preppy stuff that i didn’t have but thought was cool and i coveted back then! like shirtdresses, davey’s bags, espadrilles, old laura ashley dresses like natalie merchant used to wear, those wooden bags that let you button on different covers, swatch watches (i actually did have one of these), gold bead necklaces (the kind where the beads go all the way around NOT add-a-beads!), wooden jewelry, and monogrammed stuff. i had some monogrammed sweaters and i kinda like them again now, even though i don’t have one. you know, the fitted cotton or wool pullovers with your initials, and maybe something like little strawberries around them, in the center of the sweater? oh yes, and something else the older kids would wear was knee-length corduroy shorts, like in a green or navy color, with knee socks that were usually navy. right now i’m picturing a high school girl with a cute bob, wearing green corduroy knee short and navy knee socks with penny loafers and a monogrammed sweater and an undershort with her collar flipped and holding a navy wooden button purse! i like it! 🙂

  11. funny how some of the fashion styles were universal, and some popped up in certain areas while others didn’t…

in ’90, when i was in 7th grade (in private school in san francisco), i typically wore:

tight jean shorts or loose, high wasted “dress” shorts, or baggy gap jeans

a baggy hanes v-neck t shirt, tucked in

flats like the ones i posted

    and lots of silver jewelry

  12. yes…i always think of my docs, and how i wore them everywhere, and swore i’d never wear anything else!
and i did just recently buy converse gym shoes–i forgot how comfortable they are…

gee, in ’90, i was out of high school for 1 year… 😛

  13. Love the shoes!
I have a pair of similar ones in black bought in a shoe shop near my house, but they are all the way form Argentina
    Love the colour palette
    Much love
And congratulations on such wonderful blog

  14. i just bought a pair of those woven flats on ebay two minutes ago. it makes me laugh that whenever i picture myself wearing them, i picture myself with an ankle bracelet, too. urgh! i hope it doesn’t come to that.

the only thing i’d have a problem re-wearing are docs, fer sure. i wore them endlessly with floral babydoll dresses and lace tights; or short shorts, sweaters, and leggings. since all of the above excepting docs are back in a huge way, and i’m already looking a little like brenda walsh with my bangs if i think about it too hard, i’m cringing at the thought of breaking out grunge boots.

on the other hands, they were so, so comfortable. . . .

  15. yes totally! and converse all stars, saddle oxfords, those reversible handbags with covers that button on with those wood handles (I still want my old one back), and vans.

  16. oh wait, and do you remember friendship pins and friendship bracelets? The pins were the best — beads on safety pins!

  17. Hello – Yes, I’m totally relating, in fact I had a pair of the shoes in your photo! What a weird fashion flash back from grade 7-8!!

  18. Loved my Kenya sisal bag back in the mid 80s. I saw a women with an ‘updated’ version. I could not help myself from asking her “where did she get it?”. It was bright fuchsia and bigger with a leather inside pocket. It had a little zebra hanging on the strap. She said it is called a “Zebag”.
I have to get me one of those Zebags!!! 🙂
