after reading a comment about a shop called lake, from my post on tamar mogendorff, i saw this photo taken by liza corbett, and then found the website of lauri faggioni. i loved seeing photos of lauri’s hand stitched animals, and they do look similar to tamar’s. both look like so much care and attention is put into each doll. it reminds me of my favorite book: goldie the doll maker. thanks liza!

(were is lake? is it still there?)

  1. i went to see the michel gondry show at deitch projects, and was most delighted with lauri’s animals. they were so cool in person, and seeing them animated was amazing.

unfortunately i think the gallery show is closed, but everyone can go see the movie.

  2. the folks at cog & pearl are friends with lake, they had some of her animals for sale a while back. i think they might have told me that lake is no more, but i can’t remember exactly…

  3. just to elucidate: the movie i am talking about is the science of sleep by michel gondry.

  4. thanks amanda… i assumed you meant the science of sleep, but wasn’t sure. i haven’t seen it yet! i need to asap…

  5. I gasped when I saw the tree boat on Lauri Faggioni’s site. It was my favorite thing in The Science of Sleep! Thank you for posting this!

  6. it seems like lake (the store) is no longer. it used to be in nyc at 280 East 10th. lauri’s animals and window displays were so incredibly charming.

  7. Yes Lake is no more. It closed a while back, maybe in 2003-2004? Glad to see Lauri’s still actively making stuff!

  8. Hi you guys, I read your post on the blog and just wanted to say thank you for your support and your kind words about my work. It is greatly appreciated. I did close Lake but I still have the store which I use as my work shop. I am still very much making animals. I am glad that it was brought to you guys attention that Tamar is not me. I have been having a lot of problems with this, because her work looks very identical to mine. Unfortunately Tamar is now selling her work at the exact same shop’s I used to carry my stuff, so people think it is mine. But it’s not. I am unable to sell to these shops now because she makes stuff that is so similar it is frightening. After I saw the new peacock and flamingos my heart broke. It has made me really depressed actually and I am affraid to update my site because everytime I do, she makes the same pieces. I am currently working on a new site and although I hate to do this, I might have to have it password protected. In that case I will be sure to let you know. If Tamar lived in Texas or anywhere else in the world, I would say she and I should be studied for sharing a brain, but since I know her from Lake and she is selling here in New York to my old clients it’s created a problem for me. So since I am unable to sell in the stores now if anyone is interested in purchasing anything from me, please e-mail me.

Thanks again for your support and thank you for pointing that out.

Big love, and keep making beautiful art.

    Lauri Faggioni

  9. hi lauri

thanks so much for saying hello and giving us an update on the store and your work. i love your dolls so much. i’m sorry to hear about your difficulties with tamar’s work being so similar. i know how protective i am of my personal work, and i think all designers are– so i can understand how you must feel. it’s really unfortunate that stores will not carry pieces by both of you.

i would love to know about your upcoming projects and let us know about the website… thanks again for commenting.

  10. yes yes yes! goldie the dollmaker. i will spend some time in my mind connecting her story with the story in the science of sleep.

i am very thrilled to know of lauri!

  11. hello pretty city–
it’s so nice to have someone else who can understand my love for Goldie the Dollmaker!! because of that book, i romanticize the life of anyone who makes dolls for a living…
i’m hoping to see the movie this weekend!

  12. to me, there is a huge difference between lauri’s animals and tamar’s. i’ve been an admirer of lauri’s work for awhile. when i came across tamar’s within this past year, it seemed to me that is was very much inspired by lauri but did not have the subtle detailing, the beautiful melancholy silhouettes, the precious handstitching, or the clever use of materials.

  13. I don’t know how I got to this post, maybe from DesignSponge, but I just wanted to say that I wandered into Lake in the East Village around 2003 and my partner Mary Welch and I were so inspired and impressed talking to Lauri and her dreams that we decided to branch out and start our own shop containing curious objects and home furnishings on E. 3rd Street.

Our little shop became Niche Modern and led us into making glass lighting fixtures. We never intended any of this and it just reminded me how someone somewhere can do something which inspires you to do something which leads you to do something else. Life is so circuitous.

Mary and I would often walk by lake after we opened Niche to thank Lauri, but sadly it was always closed, although we suspected she was in the back room working diligently.

Thank you Lauri for changing our lives in ways that you would never have known.
